EXHIBITION DEVELOPMENT, DESIGN + GRAPHICS

Siempre Pescando — Museó de Ancon (Peru)

The task was to change the inside display to build pride in the local artisan fishing culture. Lacking related archaeological scholarship and artifacts was challenging, so we talked with the community. Learning that the artisan techniques hadn’t changed substantially, I decided to combine the modern expertise of fishermen with what was known of ancient marine culture. The archaeological vitrine would hold evidence including ceramics with sea motifs, discarded shells and the few ancient tools. For the contemporary vitrine, locals volunteered to make tools that could be displayed with small-scale boat models representing the three types of fisherman. Large-scale graphic panels bring the objects and information closer to the viewer. Consulting a carpenter, I proposed splitting the huge vitrines and adding doors to alleviate maintenance difficulties and use the space dynamically. This project proposal was well-received by the board of directors.
